Maggie in the Woods

This is Maggie in the Woods, a fabulous polka from Ireland, but again one’s that’s put its boots on and travelled the world!  It will go in a set with Battered Hake and then Tralee Gaol.

Here are the videos of the tune

…and the harmony for the B part here:

Here are the dots:

Tralee Gaol

This is Tralee Gaol, an Irish polka that I know from playing for ceilidhs.  It goes by many names and seems to be pretty widespread in Ireland and also across various parts of the world!

Here’s the video:

And the dots are here, with a PDF also available:

Mount Hills

This is Mount Hills, from the Playford collection.

Here’s the video of the tune played slowly:

And then the tune played at speed, in the higher and lower registers:

Here are the dots, with the chords from memory so apologies if they aren’t what we had on the day, I will change them if necessary!  The PDF is available here.

About Us

Classes have moved online for the foreseeable future.  They are held on Mondays, 7:30 till around 8:30, please contact me for a link if you’d like to attend remotely.

If you’ve enjoyed this site, or attended a session and you’re not a yearly subscriber, please consider making a small donation via the Paypal button below (you don’t need a Paypal account to donate).

The Ealing sessions workshops were founded by Laurel Swift in 2000, and the class goes from strength to strength, regularly playing concerts and ceilidhs as the West London Folk Band. Laurel handed the class over to Deb Chalmers in September 2018, hence the new website!  This site is designed to support the class, though of course anyone is welcome to learn the tunes and post questions.

We learn a new tune almost every week, and everything is taught by ear, though of course you are welcome to make your own notes.

The class is held upstairs at West London Trade Union Club, 33-35 High Street, Acton, London, W3 6ND. Parking in nearby streets is fairly simple, lots of buses pass the door and Acton Central Overground station is 5 minutes walk.
Monday evening term-times: 7:15pm – 9:15pm.
Cost: £9 per night.
Who comes? Bedroom musicians, beginner musicians, starting-again musicians, younger musicians, late bloomers, musicians that think they can only read the dots, musicians who worry that they can’t read the dots – you are all welcome.

The old website with the videos and tunes is available here.
